Enmeshment: Helping Teenage Clients Differentiate.

Therapy with teens can be challenging when there are signs of family enmeshment, but you only have access to one person in the family. There are a few ways to use family systems therapy in your work with an individual teen to help with enmeshment and differentiation, and this is one of the techniques that we use frequently.  The activity helps clients see if they are having the same thoughts, feelings and behaviors as a family member, and gives them the option to decide to keep them or not.

Building Rapport With Teens: How To Get Teens To Talk In Therapy

I have found that approaching the first sessions with a teenager the same way I would handle a session with an adult client sometimes leads to resistance or at least sessions in which I have to work much harder than I am used to. Our training often encourages us to start with the presenting problem and move into background information - perhaps a BioPsychoSocial perspective or Family Of Origin depending on your orientation, the key to getting teens to talk in therapy is to avoid this common pitfall.  This product comes with an explanatory video and a 10 page e-book on working with teens, which includes some of my favorite questions to ask adolescent clients.

The Teen Timeline Chart

The timeline chart is an incredible tool to learn about your client's life experiences, from the traumatic and stressful, to the positive and successful. This is not intended to replace a thorough clinical intake, but to supplement one and to engage clients in a visual representation of their experiences. Furthermore, this is an overly simplified method of collecting data that should inform your intake process or add to what you have already ascertained from the client. If you are using this in the beginning of treatment, resist diving into any significant trauma and focus instead on gaining a broad overview of events and situations.
