An Adolescent Clinical Director Shares His Family Communication Activities

As Clinical Director of an adolescent treatment center, I had the overwhelming task of putting together a program for the teens that stayed with us, but also for their families. As a family systems therapist, an adolescent treatment center is completely off-brand! We believe in working with the entire family at the same time, so I had a challenge ahead of me while the teens stayed with us, but also in setting parents and families up after they left.

Family Therapy Resources: The House Meeting

One of the core components of the program I developed was our weekly house meeting, which was based on the idea of 'clinical availability'. This is the ability and willingness of the treatment team to be available to our clients while they were living with us, to help them feel they were seen and heard, and to actually sit down and listen to them and modify the program accordingly.

We passed the ball of a regular house meeting transferred to the family, and we encouraged a weekly family meeting with a guided format to help improve and maintain communication between teens and adults. This is the version I share with clients in my private practice today.

Family communication is exchanging information, feelings, and ideas between family members. It includes both talking or verbal and nonverbal interactions and is essential to building strong relationships and maintaining family harmony.

Why Is Family Communication Important?

Good communication is vital in any relationship, and family communication at home is no exception. Family members who are able to communicate effectively are more likely to have stronger relationships, better problem-solving skills, and a greater sense of trust and understanding.

Effective family communication can also help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts, as well as provide a sense of support and connection during difficult times. It's one of the main components of family therapy and is a vital part of any residential center or IOP program for teens. Family counselors will often use exercises that try and improve empathy, help with assertive expressions of anger and basic listening skills, and teach family members how to share feelings.

  4. Practice active listening: During family meetings, make sure that everyone is actively listening and repeating what each person has said to ensure understanding.

  5. Keep it positive: Use family meetings as an opportunity to celebrate successes and work through challenges together. Focus on positive communication and finding solutions rather than placing blame.

Fun and Engaging Activities for Family Meetings:

Incorporating fun and engaging activities into family meetings can help keep everyone interested and involved. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Family game night: Have a designated game night where everyone can play their favorite games together.

  2. Family trivia: Create a family trivia game where everyone can test their knowledge of each other and family history.
